- Jim is Co-Founder and board member of CAV Angels, an angel investment club for University of Virginia alumni that has invested in numerous Virginia-based startups.
- He served as Secretary of Commerce and Trade for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 2010 to 2014 under Governor Bob McDonnell, overseeing 13 state agencies focused on economic growth.
- Jim founded and led CHM, a government IT contracting firm, growing it from 5 to 550 employees and $90 million in revenue before its 2005 sale; the company was named Virginia’s fastest-growing private company in 1999.
- He teaches Entrepreneurial Finance at UVA’s Engineering School and holds a BS from Old Dominion University, an MBA from UVA’s Darden School, and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center.
